Ingredients

  • 1 large white onion

  • 1/2 cup all purpose white flour (can use GF flour)

  • 1 tbsp corn starch (optional – it helps make it more crispy)

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • 1/2 tsp chili powder (+/- per tolerance)

  • 1 tsp Korean spice (or use Italian, or any other of your choice)

  • salt per taste

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/3 cup panko bread crumbs

  • 5-6 sprays of Avocado oil

Directions

  • Peel onion, make sure not to remove the onion root. Carefully cut onion in 4 quarters, then again in 4 quarters. Make sure not to go too close to the root as it will break the onion. Transfer onion in an ice bath for about 2-3 hours. Make sure onion is fully submerged in the water. This will help cut down the bitterness of an onion.
  • After 2-3 hours, carefully remove the onion from ice bath and place it on a clean kitchen towel. Gently squeeze out all the water as much as possible. Once onion is fully dry, keep it aside.
  • In a large bowl, toss the flour and all the spices. Add 1/2 cup of water and mix. Now carefully place the onion into this bowl and with a spoon or spatula coat the onion with the batter. Do your best to coat the entire onion and all the pieces. Carefully remove the onion from this bowl and transfer to a large plate. Sprinkle panko bread crumbs evenly. Carefully transfer the onion to an air fryer basket. Lightly spray with cooking oil. You only need about 5-6 sprays. Air fry at 400 F for about 15-17 minutes.
  • Once ready, remove from an air fryer, transfer to a plate and enjoy it with your favorite dipping sauce. I like to eat it with my Sriracha Mayo. See recipe here.
